Growing up I was sensitive, shy, and aimed to please everyone. Apologizing at any minor incident or inconvenience was natural. I never wanted to let anyone down and I was scared to. While trying to figure out the type of person I wanted to become, I lacked self-esteem and a sense of self. Others thought I lacked courage, strength, and character. They would say, "Grow a Backbone!” They thought I needed to gain confidence and bravery. They thought people walked all over me. This is the reclamation of resilience and the result of maturity - a self-portrait. My backbone is made of steel.
