In a world plagued by societal norms and expectations, we are constantly reminded of how we should look, act and feel in order to be accepted, the constant weight of pressure to conform has become our normal. Ella Smith interrogates the construct of stereotype and pushes past the boundaries that are seemingly set in stone. She disrupts, and through this disruption, a chance to reconstruct prevails. Smith makes use of her own vulnerability and lived experiences in her creation as she is often inspired by her interactions with others and her place in the world. Positioning herself within the unavoidable discomfort of being vulnerable, she pushes past her own boundaries and investigates the truth behind societies obsession with perfection. Smith’s work normalizes the imperfect which makes us beautifully unique. Through use of representation, her work encourages a shift in the standards that punish us for being human.
